Fashion Editor 1: Where should we do the latest shoot?
Fashion Editor 2: A place with lot’s of poor people
Fashion Editor 1: Great! How about a cancer ward?
Fashion Editor 2: They’re just sick, not poor, although probably poor.
Fashion Editor 1: What about Chile? Or Haiti?
Fashion Editor 2: Too expensive.
Fashion Editor 1: A Building site? Those labourers must be poor, they wear the same outfit every day!
Fashion Editor 2: Brilliant! What about models?
Fashion Editor 1: We don’t have the budget, let’s just use some random Mexican bird and go heavy on the Photoshop. We will also need an inane quote that is so meaningless it’s actually offensive.
Fashion Editor 2: How about “Hey, guess what? My left shoe costs more than you will earn in the next three years.”
Fashion Editor 1: Not inane enough.
Fashion Editor 2: “Style is a manifestation of inner grace?” That means absolutely fuck all.
Fashion Editor 1: Brilliant. Quick, Happy Hour at Scarlett’s starts in ten minutes!!!

In Magazines on November 30, 2008 at 6:54 pmInteresting piece in the National (I know, I know) about the rise of luxury publishing, or at least its non-demise. ITP, a local publishing house well known for its ‘niche’ titles (pipe cleaner’s monthly anyone) has closed down two of these b2b magazines according to the article, while seeing one of its luxury titles, Harper’s Bazaar breaking the 300-page mark.
While such advertising feats are common in other markets (Hong Kong was full of records in such matters last year) that is relatively rare here. Custom luxury publishing will also remain strong in my view – big, luxury brands will still advertise, and want beautiful products to advertise in – hopefully a commercial imperative that will result in a raising of editorial/design standards in Dubai.
