URBN etc

In Magazines, Newspapers, Published articles on February 3, 2010 at 12:27 pm

Our new project URBN got a mention on the best evening radio news show last week. Eamonn spoke about why what we are doing makes sense and some future plans. There is also an interview with him about URBN in this Friday’s Irish Times.

If you get a chance to pick up Communicate this month, I have written two pieces: one on Emirates’ and Ethihad’s use of sports marketing and a piece on a local PR firm who are sponsoring a Dubai-based rally driver. Managed to get Hunter S. Thompson and Playboy mentioned in the intro which is nice.

Peaks, prose and projects

In Books, Magazines on January 12, 2010 at 3:17 pm

Landed in Nepal this afternoon for a three-day visa run. Beautiful weather, although have been stuck inside all day working. Will explore the city tomorrow. Writing a piece for Esquire Middle East on what, if anything, is left of the city’s hippy community. Also have six (6) freelance articles to do in the next two weeks, two contract editing/subbing jobs and the setting up of a mobile applications company (albeit with some rather experienced assistance). Read most of Michael Herr’s Dispatches on the plane. Brilliantly written; his wild, scattergun prose mirrors the confusion of the war and is one of the best books I have ever read about conflict. If anyone is in Dubai on Sunday night, check out Narain Jashanmal’s creative writing workshop at the Shelter.

Writing, writing, writing

In Books, Magazines on December 23, 2009 at 5:45 pm

Back in Dubai trying to finish a piece on Kuwait for HK magazine, a piece on Beirut and Dubai for the South China Morning Post and booking tickets to Nepal to do a piece for Esquire Middle East. Will be there over the New Year which should be interesting. Also finished four books in the past four days including a re-read of Hunter S. Thompson’s Rum Diary, definitely one of his best – written before his mind got addled with all manner of substances.

Screenplay Shenanigans

In Books on December 7, 2009 at 7:44 pm

Getting to a good place with a comedy screenplay I am working on. The dialogue is flowing, need to work on character development and episode narratives. Fiction is a lot more fun than journalism – no nasty things such as facts to get in the way. Was once told the only way to write a good screenplay is to read constantly. Given I have been doing that for the past 3 months, there might be some merit to that.

On Writing Well came through in the post yesterday which is something every journalist/writer/human should read. The UAE’s PR community should be forced at gunpoint to read it.

Irish Times piece

Market Meanderings

In Magazines on August 23, 2009 at 3:15 pm

Despite the torrid state of the international publishing industry, deals are still being made, particularly in this region, which is illustrated by the World Magazine Marketplace which is set to be held in Dubai on November 2-3. Organised by the catchily named International Federation of the Periodical Press (or FIPP), the event will see publishers from around the world descending on Dubai. Attendees include Future Publishing, Northern and Shell, Edipresse, IDG and SPH from Singapore. Hopefully they will be too  busy making deals to read the local magazines, which are by and large, appalling.

Esquire Dubai

In Magazines on August 20, 2009 at 2:34 pm

So Esquire is launching a Middle East edition, or at least an English edition with some localised content. ITP have won the license and it is hard not to be pessimistic about this launch. Apart from a (presumably) cheaper cover price, is there that much local content of interest to expats here? The two main men’s magazines (IQ and 4 Men) are both well below average and IQ has gone monthly (after launching as a weekly). Unless they get a great team in place, it is hard to see why readers would pick the localised version over the UK version, which is consistently excellent, far better than the US version in my opinion. With a launch date set for later in the year, watch this space.
